Deputy Grabois on Lowering Criminal Responsibility Age in Argentina

Argentine Deputy Juan Grabois commented on the proposal to lower the age of criminal responsibility. According to him, the real problem lies in the mental health and drug use among youth, not in punishment.

National deputy of the Peronist bloc Juan Grabois stated that if his peers want to lower the age of criminal responsibility to "zero", let them do it, since in his opinion the problem is the "previous situation" of girls, boys, and adolescents linked to mental health and drug consumption.

"They can lower it to zero years if they want, because it's a false dichotomy. The problem is how to approach crime by children, adolescents, and the approach has to be in the previous situation, which involves mental health and consumption. When you have a teenager lost to paco, the State has to have the tools for them to go to an internment center, and that doesn't exist," he said.

Grabois also emphasized that one of the most important focuses for the State would be to create confined places so that young people who present addictions "can be admitted" and, consequently, be channeled towards recovery: "That's what mothers in the neighborhoods are asking me for."

"We also have the position that when there is a blood crime, a serious event, there should be a trial and a sentence. And they (the officialism and the aligned blocs) say so," he added.

"It's not that they are paladins of justice and defenders of the victims, they use their pain for cheap politicking," he concluded.

"But they didn't put the Mental Health Law into extraordinary sessions, because they don't care, they are liars and they deceive the people," he indicated.

He assured that, from his space, they have the position of the Argentine Catholic Church and manifested that it is "lamentable" that Catholic deputies "who tear their clothes over other issues" do not listen to the Episcopal Conference that calls to discuss the situation of the kids "who are in a situation of consumption" and who are "the ones who mainly commit crimes."
